Snapshot of MLS
Major League Soccer (MLS) has expanded rapidly since its inaugural season in 1996 when just 10 teams competed. All of those original teams still exist today, with the exception of the Tampa Bay Mutiny who folded in 2002. MLS now has 29 teams, with the latest addition; St.Louis City SC joining the competition for the 2023 season. The league has also approved an additional franchise (San Diego FC) which will take the total number of teams to an even 30 by 2025.
The most successful (and popular) team is the LA Galaxy who have 5 MLS Cups, although in general success has been fairly evenly distributed throughout the league with 15 teams (51%) winning the MLS Cup at least once.
76% of MLS teams play in soccer-specific stadiums, while the others share NFL/CFL/MLB stadiums.
